Cleric Divine Domain – Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage (Download)

This week I’m continuing my Ravnica Guildmage subclasses cycle, featuring the last guild featured in the Return to Ravnica set, the Selesnya Conclave, with the Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage. For this design, I found that emulating the Selesnya’s main mechanics (in particular, multiplying creatures) in D&D proved to not mesh well with the system’s gameplay, so looked at Selesnya for the healer and support theme.

The current iteration of this subclass focuses on the Convoke ability of Selesnya cards to allow the player more powerful spells with the support of other characters. While the base design could initially prove extremely powerful, I felt that capping it to the level of spell slots that the character can already use.

The Rootborn Companion and Improved Companions ability was designed as a compromise of giving the Selesnya character a companion summoning ability, but also with a limit to uses, numbers and period of time. I took inspiration from cards like Growing Ranks and Selesnya elementals for the idea of being able to summon plant-based allies.

Much like the card it’s named after, I

designed

Collective Blessing to provide substantial bonuses to the offensive and defensive stats of friendly characters, but as it isn’t static I felt it’d be more interesting for gameplay’s sake to let the character decide on which bonus to give.
